The opening days of Untitled, Art,
Phase 2 : Complete Setup - Print 1
Fox, Becca, Veronica, and Alex head to Miami, sponsored as a Kendall College of Art and Design initiative, to work with Site Lab on a project at Art Basel. Our first couple of days were spent getting settled and putting up the radio tower.
Not Design has traded in our humble garage studio in search of something more. We have partnered with Site:Lab and Kendall College of Art and Design to install Radio Station, Miami Folly 2. This is Site:labs 5th year participating in Art Basel’s Untitled, Miami. (By the way did I mention we are in Miami?) Overall first impressions, Miami is hot, and we are in a greenhouse.
Being in an environment like this, is hard to explain. The air is thicker, there’s a sense of competitiveness, that isn’t talked about but surrounds you, it builds momentum with every decision that is made. At first it made me anxious, but this environment doesn’t allow time for overthinking, or getting caught dwelling on emotions. It just is. The space is. The work is.
Currently, there’s more white walls than anything and we are the giant steel sculpture in the center of the space. Not Design needs an ego and there is no better place to get one. Plants need sun, and soil to grow- Not Design needs moxie. This is a studio that has been around since 2008 and has its roots stuck in any and every initiative it can. Using unconventional or under utilized means in order to challenge the status quo is what we thrive on, its our water, soil and sunlight.
We are participating live in Art Basel as a response to the space and the event itself. We have come down with no pre made prints, we don’t have any paintings to hang on gallery walls; just a press, and a means to use it. Through our initiative with Site:Lab we have installed a sculpture that radio host Cathy Byrd will be broadcasting from. Our responses will be directly influenced by her and her dialogue, conversations overheard, and interactions overseen in the space. Quick observations will be played, printed, and posted. This is what we do best.
